Decorating Mistakes, What Not to Do When Decorating Your New Home

To help make your new home look clean, organized, and free of clutter, we have compiled a list of what not to do when decorating your new home.

Over styled shelves and tables.  Less is more.  We love the look of open shelving, but one common mistake that we tend to see is too much stuff. The more items you add to your shelves or tables the smaller and more cluttered that space will look.  A good rule of thumb is to use 3 items (always think odd numbers).  You can also group like items together or use a bowl to put smaller items in (like keys, mail, etc.)

Too many colors.  We aren’t discouraging the use of color in your home, however, we do suggest using one or two primary colors and combine those with more neutral selections.

Randomly hanging too many pictures.  We love a good gallery wall, but you want to make sure that you have a plan before you just start hanging.  It is also a good idea to map out where you want your art to go. It is always easier to start with less and then add more as you go.

Too many throw pillows.  Adding too many pillows to your couch or even your bed will not only make for less sitting room, but it can also make that space appear cluttered.  Generally two to three accent pillows on either end of the couch are all you need.
