Before you hang your next set of curtains, avoid these five common mistakes.
1. Choosing Curtains That Are Too Short
One of the most common curtain mistakes is choosing panels that stop too far above the floor. Curtains should generally kiss the floor or have a slight break for a tailored look.
When in doubt, go a little longer rather than shorter. Extra length can create a more elevated, finished appearance.
2. Hanging the Curtain Rod Too Low
Where you hang your curtain rod can have a big impact on how large your windows—and even your entire room—appear.
Instead of mounting the rod directly above the window frame, consider hanging it higher and closer to the ceiling. Extending the rod beyond the window frame can also help make the window appear wider and allow more natural light into the room when the curtains are open.
3. Skipping the Lining
Not all curtains are created equal, and lining can make a noticeable difference.
A lined curtain can provide better light control, added privacy, and a more substantial look. Lining can also help protect the fabric from sunlight and give your curtains a fuller, more finished appearance.
For bedrooms and spaces where you want to block more light, consider blackout lining.
4. Choosing Fabric That Isn’t Wide Enough
Curtains shouldn't look stretched across the window when they're closed.
Make sure your panels have enough fabric to create full, natural folds. A general rule of thumb is to choose a total curtain width of about 1.5 to 2 times your window width.

5. Not Selecting the Right Hardware
Beautiful curtains deserve hardware that can support them—and complement the room.
Choose a curtain rod that is sturdy enough for the weight of your panels and long enough to extend beyond the window. Don't forget about the brackets, rings, finials, and other hardware that can affect both the function and overall look.
