The population of Charlotte was 345,000. (Today it is 2,321,000) Cabarrus County had a population of 84,000. (Today it is 244,000) There were no Charlotte Hornets, no Carolina Panthers. NCNB (in lieu of Bank of America) and First Union (in lieu of Wells Fargo) led the banking world. The Crosland Company was the leading homebuilder in the region.
Cannon Mills was the largest employer in Cabarrus County and led the world in the manufacture of sheets and towels. Phillip Morris was in the process of building the world’s largest cigarette manufacturing company in Concord.
Carter, the Bee Gees, Disco, NCNB, First Union, The Crosland Company, Cannon Mills, Phillip Morris, all are gone.
