The Best Ways to Clean Different Floor Types

One of the number 1 ways to keep your home looking and feeling new is to keep your floors clean!  No matter what type of flooring you have, you should always put a little more TLC into those areas, especially if you are about to put your home up for sale!  Here are a few tips on how to keep your hardwood, tile, and carpet flooring clean.

Hardwood Floors:  Hardwood flooring is fairly easy to maintain and keep clean.  Contrary to popular belief, you do not need a bunch of fancy products to keep your floors in tip top shape.  Soap and water are 2 of the best combinations for cleaning your floors.  Baking soda works well on those tough stains or scuffs, and of course you always need a good microfiber mop.

Tile Floors:  Ceramic Tile floors are known for their durability and resiliency, which is one of the big things that sets them apart from other flooring types.  They are also extremely easy to maintain, making tile flooring a very popular choice.  The best way to make sure your floors stay in tip top shape is to regularly sweep, vacuum, and damp mop your floors.  Water is a great and effective way to keep your tile flooring looking new.  Grout in your tile is another thing that you will want to make sure stays clean.  The easiest way to do this is to dip a toothbrush into a mix of hydrogen peroxide and water and then scrub the area clean.

Carpet Floors:  There are definite pros and cons when it comes to carpet flooring.  Carpet adds warmth and color to any room, and carpet also stains and shows dirt easy making them a little more challenging to get clean.  Regular vacuuming provides the first line of defense for keeping dirt and grime away.  However you should also plan on shampooing your carpet at least every 12-18 months.  Hiring a professional carpet cleaning company is always a good and easy way to get them cleaned.  You can also rent a carpet cleaning machine from a grocery store as well.

3 common mistakes that will lead to dirty and stained floors:

  1. Wearing your shoes indoors.  Yes we know it is annoying to remove your shoes every single time you step inside, but it will dramatically help keep all of your floors clean.  Plus think about all of the dirt and germs that you collect on the bottom of your shoes each day!  Who wants that inside their home anyways?
  2. Not vacuuming enough.  No matter what type of flooring you may have, vacuuming is the #1 way to keep those floors clean.
  3. Waiting too long to clean up spills.  Spills are bound to happen, and if treated in a timely manner they usually cause little to no damage.  However, when you let the spills sit and dry that is when they become a dreaded stain.
