How to Move In Without Destroying Your New Home

Moving into your new home is both exciting and stressful.  No one wants to scratch their freshly painted walls when they are trying to move their couch into their new home, or scuff their brand new hardwoods while trying to move the dining room buffet piece.  After recently moving out of our Aspen Model and into our new Stratford Model at Ashlyn Creek, we wanted to share our tips and tricks for keeping your walls white, and your hardwoods shiny.

Plan:

Have a plan before you start packing anything.  Are you going to hire movers or bribe ask your friends to help you?  Hiring movers will definitely save you the headache (and back ache) of lifting heavy furniture, but it can be expensive, especially if it takes them longer than a day to do it.  If you plan to move on your own, then you will need to make sure you get the necessary items: boxes, tape, bubble wrap, a sharpie, moving blankets, and drop cloths.

The first step is to box up all items room by room trying to avoid mixing items from different rooms.  Make sure you label the outside of your boxes with what room they belong to.  This will help you know exactly what room in your new home to put the box in.  Use towels and blankets to wrap breakable items with, of course bubble wrap works too.

When moving out of your old home, start on the main level and work your way up.  Then when you get to your new home, you can start moving items upstairs first and work your way down.  The last thing you want is to have furniture for downstairs in your way as you try to carry a mattress upstairs.

Protect the floors and walls:

Take the time to place drop clothes on the floor before you start moving.  This will even help you slide furniture across the room without scratching the hardwoods.

You can do the same thing with your walls, just drape a sheet down the wall so that when you are moving a heavy headboard up the stairs the wall is covered.  You can even cover your large pieces of furniture with moving blankets so that when you accidentally bump the wall, it is cushioned and less likely to leave a mark.

Touch-up paint:

Know your wall colors.  Sherwin Williams is the brand of paint that we use in all of our homes, and is a great place to stop in for touch up paint..  This will come in handy if you have any spots on the wall that might need a little touching up.
